Multiple fires propelled by fierce winds were raging across the Los Angeles area on Wednesday, burning thousands of acres and prompting widespread evacuations.
Here are the three biggest blazes:
Palisades fire
The largest, the Palisades fire, covered more than 2,900 acres as of 3 a.m. Pacific time, according to Cal Fire. It spread rapidly on Tuesday and forced tens of thousands of residents to evacuate, including celebrities in the affluent Pacific Palisades neighborhood along the Pacific Ocean.
Evacuation orders have since expanded to include areas along the Pacific Coast Highway and parts of the city of Santa Monica.
Eaton fire
On the eastern end of the Los Angeles area, another fire broke out Tuesday evening in Eaton Canyon, in the San Gabriel Mountains above the city of Altadena. It had covered 1,000 acres as of Wednesday morning.
Hurst fire
Northwest of Los Angeles, the Hurst fire was burning in Sylmar, a rural community in the San Fernando Valley known for its horse properties. It had covered 500 acres as of Wednesday morning.
