Dan Erickson, the writer and creator of Severance, shed light on the twists and turns in the final episode of Season 2.
Adam Scott’s character, Mark Scout, is faced with the biggest dilemma in the show when his Outie’s wife, Gemma is calling out to him to run away forever, while Helly R, his Innie’s love interest, is on the other side.
Greatest shock came to the fans when Mark chose to return to Lumon with Helly, instead of going along with his wife.
Explaining the logic of his decision, in interview with Forbes, Erickson explained that this moment was crucial for the character development for the Innie Mark, who is required to give up his life so that the Outie can go back to his wife.
“But this guy has some questions about it, and it was one of my favorite things we’ve ever shot. I had no idea if it would work until it was done. When you’re shooting a scene like that, it doesn’t feel like it’s going to feel [when it’s done], because you’re shooting it in pieces, and the editing is so important to it. But the first time I actually saw that scene, I openly wept because I really didn’t know if it was gonna work — and then it did,” said Erickson.
The scene represents the journey Innie Mark has taken to get there, as it parallels one of the first scenes in the season, where he runs “straight to Wellness to see if Ms. Casey is there — as opposed to going to MDR to see if Helly and his friends are there.”
Speaking of the shocking choice Innie Mark makes, he added, “But it felt like the only emotionally honest choice for Innie Mark to make, because the fact is he’s looking at this woman and he may sympathize with her, but the the woman that he loves is standing behind him.”
