Throne and Liberty details major combat rework ahead of its first free expansion

Free-to-play MMORPG Throne and Liberty has established a solid start since its global launch in October 2024. It’s held onto a respectable player count over the holiday season, and is still the biggest free MMO on Steam in 2025 so far. Amazon Games and NCSoft are picking back up with updates for the new year, and the first major Throne and Liberty expansion, Talandre, is on the horizon. Ahead of that, globalization design manager ‘Tico’ gives us a look at what’s to come for Throne and Liberty in 2025.

Top of the list for the January installment of ‘Tico Talks’ are server merges. Throne and Liberty servers are still fairly well-populated, but Amazon Games is eager to ensure “a competitive landscape within servers” while also ensuring you have plenty of people to play with. This “multi-step process” will remove the restriction of transfers between early access and launch servers for the free MMORPG and merge auction houses together across servers. Tico notes that any servers affected by this Throne and Liberty update will be consolidated into brand-new servers, rather than pushing one group of players onto another server that already exists.

As it looks towards the release of its first free expansion, Tico says the teams at Amazon Games and NCSoft “have been focused on making fundamental improvements to Throne and Liberty.” These include “foundational changes to our combat mechanics.” You’ll now maintain your normal movement speed while attacking, with consistent movement controls both in and out of combat. You will no longer need to face your target while attacking; instead, line-of-sight requirements are being introduced when targeting enemies, which includes other players.

The base range of melee attacks has been increased, and movement is now character-based rather than camera-based. Changes to the targeting system aim to make both tab targeting and mouse click targeting more responsive and precise. Tico explains that the team is currently working on “multiple rounds of extensive testing” for this full set of combat changes, and expects them to arrive alongside the Talandre expansion.

Next, Tico turns their attention to open-world PvP, one of Throne and Liberty’s greatest strengths. In particular, he highlights “the incredibly positive reception to guild vs. guild content,” and concerns around the dominance of giant ‘mega-alliances’ on some servers. To address both of these, field bosses will be turned from open-world PvP encounters into one-on-one conflicts between two guilds. More details on this change will come in February.

Tico also addresses some points of community speculation. Tier two gear will arrive with the Talandre expansion, and you’ll be able to upgrade it all the way to +12 immediately. Arcboss weapons will be buffed to match the power of tier two weapons, and will also be available to upgrade to +12. Also coming with Talandre is a new weapon mastery system that has been widely discussed from its implementation on Korean servers.

Of course, all these changes beg the question of when we’ll find out more about Talandre. The answer is coming soon – the expansion’s reveal will take place during an edition of Eye on Solisium on Tuesday January 28. Before we get there, however, an update for the free Steam game on Thursday January 23 will implement the previously announced UI improvements to show guild contributions during conflict mode boss fights, as well as new night-time chests for the Shadowed Crypt.

That January 23 update will also include some changes designed to make daily activities feel like less of a slog. You’ll be able to open normal chests at the end of dungeons even when doing Dimensional Trials. Following that, from Thursday February 13, you’ll get the ability to open multiple chests in a single dungeon run, starting with one-star dungeons. Tico adds that the team is also working on alterations to make Abyss Dungeons more fun.

That’s all the key adjustments for now, but Tico lists a few other core goals that Amazon Games and NCSoft are working on. These include methods to reduce player toxicity, especially during co-op content. Inventory management for both items and runes is being streamlined, along with a reduction of ‘material overload.’ Finally, the teams are working on introducing more flexibility for gear progression, allowing you to tackle your preferred mix of PvE and PvP content rather than feeling forced into certain activities.
